How this calculator works
From your viewing distance we suggest a diagonal band that fills a comfortable field of view for 16:9 content. If you enter a throw ratio, we also compute the actual image size your projector produces at that distance (screen width = distance รท throw ratio, then converted to a diagonal for your aspect ratio).
Example
At a 12-foot viewing distance, a comfortable screen is roughly 86 to 121 inches diagonal. If your projector has a 1.2 throw ratio, it would produce about a 122-inch image at that distance.
Limitations
Brightness matters: a very large image from an underpowered projector looks washed out, especially with ambient light. Match screen size to the projector’s lumens and your room’s light control.
Frequently asked questions
What is a throw ratio?
It’s the distance from the projector to the screen divided by the image width. A 1.2 throw ratio means the projector sits 1.2 feet back for every 1 foot of image width.
Bigger screen or brighter image?
In a room with light, prioritise brightness and a slightly smaller screen. In a dedicated dark room, you can push size further.
